1952 SUPERBIRD Washington NGC PF 67 Cameo
The rare 1952 SUPERBIRD Washington! And with CAMEO devices!!! The 1952 Superbird was given the name because of the “S” that can be faintly seen on the chest of the eagle on the reverse. It is estimated that approximately only 15,000 examples were struck among this variety, and of those only 16 have been graded by NGC in PF 67 CAMEO. Even in ALL varieties and grades for this year, just 243 exist in NGC Cameo!
There are 2 theories as to how the Superbird variety came about: one theory is that a mint employee purposely had these quarters struck with “S” on their breast in their fanatism for Superman! The more likely theory is that the “S” was received from dies clashing during the mint process.
In addition to being one of the rare few to sport this mark, this 1952 also has rare cameo features. Washington and the eagle are coated in a light layer of snow-white frost that is extremely scarce not just among the Superbird variety, but also 1952 quarters. The mirrors are deep and pitch-black with no spots, toning, or significant hairlines.
